YOUTH ADDICTION SUPPORT AND HOUSING FOR WOMEN
The Ingles Program offers youth addiction services and supportive housing to women aged 16 to 26, in recovery from serious substance abuse. The program includes high and low support housing options and specialized youth addiction case management for residents and in the community.
The Ingles Program encourages independence by supporting each woman in exploring her own strengths. Case managers work one-on-one to develop an empathic, hopeful and continuous relationship and provide a range of supports as well as acting as system navigators and advocates to link clients with the resources they need. Ingles is the only youth-specific program of this type in Toronto.
Addiction Recovery for Women
Research shows that women may be more at risk for addiction than men and that they need recovery programs tailored specifically to the needs of women. Women appear to become addicted more quickly and more powerfully than men, and once addicted are in more danger of physical and sexual abuse than are men. Although about 40% of all addicts are women, the fact that women account for only 25% of individuals seeking professional addiction treatment is evidence of the barriers that exist in most of the addiction treatment world, where treatment programs are largely tailored to the needs of men. LOFT believes that recovery programs for women must recognize the unique needs of women.
The Ingles Program
Ingles clients are actively involved in their own recovery, in the day-to-day function of their house, and in supporting one another. Each resident commits to a day program involving formal education, employment, life skills and/or recovery activities depending upon her individual needs. In addition, all residents participate in the ongoing management and chores of a large household, including meal planning and preparation, and keeping their shared spaces neat and clean.
Life at Ingles House is geared toward equipping each young woman with the personal resources and coping skills she will need to become a healthy, independent, contributing member of society.
Supportive Housing Options
The heart of the Ingles Program is Ingles House itself, one of LOFT’s original properties, which offers post-treatment residential services in a highly supportive and structured environment. The house accommodates nine women at a time supported by staff on site 24/7.
Ingles low-support housing offers women an opportunity to support each other and live and manage their home cooperatively. Although a staff member visits the house at regular intervals to facilitate house meetings, residents are able to practice the skills of independent living while being assured that their living situation is safe and while remaining connected with the Ingles program and their case manager.
Addictions Case Management
Case managers take a holistic approach, working with each Ingles client to help her get the medical, financial, emotional, employment and recreational support she needs to be healthier, happier and independent. Ingles Case Managers also carry the Ingles philosophy into the community offering support and acting as system navigators from first contact with the program and while waiting for housing. Case Management support continues to be available to Ingles “graduates” until the age of 26.
The Ingles Program is part of the LOFT Transitional Age Youth Program which means that longer-term support and services are available to those who need it.
