Providing a safe community for youth

In 2018, LOFT’s Freedom Group was born when a dedicated member of our staff became aware of a deeply concerning issue affecting many of our clients, domestic sex trafficking. She learned that most individuals were unaware of the signs of human trafficking before their experience and didn’t know where to seek support.

The Freedom Group is an integral part of our Transitional Age Youth (TAY) program, and it operates as a drop-in support group open to all clients between the ages of 16 and 29. This group operates as a safe, non-judgmental environment where young adults and youth can openly share their experiences, connect with like-minded individuals, ask questions, and receive non-judgmental support. All of the Freedom Group’s staff members are trained to offer support and guidance to clients with previous experiences of sexual exploitation.

The Freedom Group recently coordinated a trip to Ripley’s Aquarium. Our clients appreciated the opportunity to disconnect from the structure of their daily routines and build thoughtful relationships with peers who share a similar lived experience.

LOFT’s TAY program is a vital initiative designed to provide support and resources to youth and young adults facing the challenges of adulthood. This program operates on a client-centred approach and offers a comprehensive range of services, including mental health counselling, employment assistance, educational support, transitional and permanent housing solutions, and access to community resources.

LOFT has proudly served over 6,000 youth and young adults from various gender, racial and cultural communities. Through our equitable and non-judgmental environment, our youth programs strive to empower clients to overcome obstacles, develop self-confidence, and build a foundation for a brighter future. LOFT is committed to supporting the transitional journey of these individuals, ensuring they receive the guidance and resources needed to thrive in adulthood.

P.S. In honour of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, LOFT invites you to join us in sparking more conversations about the impact and prevalence of human trafficking in our community. By doing so, we can help break down the barriers of stigma, support those on their path to recovery, and reduce the number of individuals suffering in silence.
