Aging with Support: Stella’s Story

Stella and her husband receive daily support from LOFT’s care team at Shoreham Hub

Stella has been a client with LOFT for the past ten years. She is a 75-year-old who lives with her 84-year-old husband at LOFT’s Shoreham Hub, a program delivered at a Toronto Community Housing building. Struggling with many health challenges, Stella appreciates the support she receives from our team.

For the past 25 years, Stella has lived with diabetes, which is now starting to affect her vision. On top of that, Stella has a pacemaker to help control her heartbeat. These health challenges, coupled with her age and depression, make it hard for her and her husband, who has hypertension, to take care of themselves on their own.

LOFT’s Case Managers offer Stella and her husband support with activities of daily living. They check in on the couple multiple times per day, do their grocery shopping, help schedule medical appointments, vacuum their unit, and help them with taxes and other paperwork as needed.

With these supports in place, Stella and her husband can live with dignity and independently in their community. “I’m thankful to LOFT for everything they do,” Stella says. “I’m losing my strength and it is hard for me to move. I know that whenever I contact LOFT they will be there to help me.”

LOFT’s Crosslinks Seniors Housing and Support Services – Shoreham Hub partners with Toronto Community Housing to offer assisted living services to seniors 24 hours per day, seven days per week. These services ensure that seniors have access to the support they need to manage their health and address social isolation, while living independently and with dignity.
