Speech to St. George Sunday School – by Maeve Walko
The members of your church make gifts for the older people that my Mom works with at LOFT Community Services. That is people thinking and giving to other people…. which is a very good thing. So we thought it would be good for me to tell you what that means to them…….from one kid to another.
I have met many of the older people that my Mom works with since I was a really little girl. Right away I noticed that they were really happy to see me. The next thing I noticed was that they didn’t have the same things that I did. Like furniture, clothes and even food. Even though they didn’t have these things they were always really happy to see me.
When I asked my Mom why they didn’t have the same things that others do, she told me that there were many reasons and it was different for each person. Some people were sick, some people didn’t have family or friends, some people had not been able to work and some people did not even have a home before they came to a LOFT program.
Then, when I asked my Mom, why were they so happy to see me when all of these sad things have happened to them. She said because they now have people around them who care and support them and can help them get these things. I thought this makes like them feel like everyone else and not alone. She told me they are happy to see me because they don’t see kids very often but have lots of good thoughts and stories to tell! Sometimes they want me to dance with them. I have lots of fun doing that. I realized that they aren’t so different…. and that it is important that they know that….. and that people treat them with respect and kindness. Just like you and I would like.
Every Christmas the older people my Mom works with get the Christmas packages from your church. I have been there when they get your gifts and they are really happy, say “thank you!!!!” and some almost cry ……but in a happy way! Some open the gift right away…. and some save it to open on Christmas Morning so they have something to look forward to.
There are always things that they need in the gifts (and they like the treats too!) but the really important thing is that they know that kind people from your church have thought of them during Christmas and it warms their hearts and gives them hope.
