RELIEF STAFF

LOFT is in need of competent and dependable Relief Staff for its housing programs. See below for a description of the position.

LOFT Community Services offers innovative supportive housing, community support and street outreach services for the hardest to serve client groups in Toronto and York Region. We service the needs of three distinct groups of consumers: homeless youth; adults with serious mental health and/or addictions issues and those living with HIV/AIDS; as well as vulnerable and frail seniors.

These consumers live on their own in the community, or at a variety of housing sites owned or managed by LOFT which are operated on a seven days per week, twenty-four hour basis. There is an ongoing need for relief staff across the organisation to provide assistance when needed.

Relief staff are expected to be an integral part of the team and offer a variety of functions in support of the physical, social and mental well being of residents within a safe and supportive atmosphere. Depending on the residence and consumer group, this may involve:

  • maintaining the established routines of the program including security, fire and general health and safety practices,
  • building a rapport with the residents, facilitating the overall effective operation of the residence,
  • being aware of all the activities occurring in the residence;
  • responding to health care emergencies and/or implementing the emergency protocols and procedures,
  • providing individual support and crisis intervention,
  • assisting with hands-on personal care for daily living situations,
  • keeping the residents focused on their priorities,
  • preparing or documenting necessary information,
  • assisting with house clean-ups where necessary.

Qualifications:

LOFT Community Services can accommodate your schedule and will offer evening, weekend and overnight hours. What you must have is:

  • an ability to work effectively within a team environment and to interact appropriately and professionally with the residents, staff, families and partners;
  • good oral and written communication skills to actively engage the residents and/or to prepare clear notes;
  • post secondary training/education in human services or related fields;
  • well developed problem solving skills, clear thinking with the ability to make decisions, exercise authority and intervene in crises;
  • physical ability to provide all the requirements of the position.

Your assets may include:

  • experience in working with and supporting troubled youth, vulnerable adults with special needs or frail seniors in a residential setting;
  • general knowledge of mental health issues, HIV/AIDS, cognitive impairments due to ageing or addictions, and palliation;
  • an understanding of psychosocial rehabilitation principles and the therapeutic relationship;
  • counselling and responding skills;
  • first aid training and CPR

These relief positions are an invaluable way of acquiring working experience and many relief staff have become permanently employed by LOFT.
