Wilkinson Housing and Support Services
Wilkinson Housing and Support Services provides supportive housing in downtown Toronto for individuals who are dealing with serious mental illness. Its service users face many challenges, including homelessness, few work opportunities, isolation, and loneliness. Substance abuse contributes to the barriers experienced by many Wilkinson clients who are struggling to live successfully in the community. Wilkinson runs eleven houses and provides support to individuals residing at two apartment buildings which are part of LOFT. Community support services are provided to another 60 individuals. The Wilkinson staff is committed to assisting individuals with serious mental illness to live with choice and dignity in the community.
Service users are supported in making whatever changes in their lives would offer them dignity and safety. Assessment, goal setting, skills teaching, linking to resources, advocacy and monitoring may all be components of an individualized case management plan. Twenty-four hour crisis support is provided to all Wilkinson service users.
Wilkinson also provides supportive housing in North York, where such options are almost non-existent. The program has developed new partnerships and linkages with other services in order to meet the complex needs of the homeless population.
