Mrs H's Story - St. Anne's Place
Mrs. H is a 81 year old Portugese woman who was referred to St. Anne’s Place by a cross-cultural agency in Peel Region.
Mrs. H was living in an abusive situation in which she had no control over her finances, was denied the ability to visit with other family members, was isolated from any outside contacts and had to share a bedroom with three teenage grandchildren. She was desperate to leave her living situation, but feared that she would have no place to go.
Through numerous contacts with the social worker and a visit from her son who lives in Portugal, St. Anne’s was able to offer Mrs. H her own apartment.
On the day that she left her abusive living situation, there was no one home to say goodbye. However, when she arrived at St. Anne’s, she was met by a group of family members whom she had not seen in over two years. When Mrs. H was handed the key to her own apartment at St. Anne’s, she wept openly.
Today Mrs. H spends her days visiting with family members, or enjoying the company of the other Portugese tenants that live at St. Anne’s. She joins in activities and no longer feels the loneliness and isolation that she once felt.
