Etobicoke Group
Residence
Etobicoke Group Residence
(EGR) is a residential support program for young women aged 14 to 24
who have a history of family violence or breakdown, serious emotional
conflict, abuse or, for new Canadians, sponsorship breakdown, which has
left them struggling with depression, anger, self-harming or suicidal
behaviours, substance abuse, and conflicted or detached personal and
family relationships.
Many of the young women
who come to EGR have run from home to the refuge of shelters, stopovers
at homes of friends, or in many cases, to the streets.
EGR's services include a
high-support group home for seven young women aged 14 to 18, and three
large houses in Toronto's West End offering affordable, low-support
cooperative housing for 15 young women aged 16 to 24. When they
leave these residential programs, clients can receive after-care
services supporting them in their transition back into the community.
We focus on preparation
for independent living and on empowering youth to redefine themselves
and see their own strengths, rather than seeing themselves as victims.
They are supported in the development or strengthening of basic life
and interpersonal skills, and in continuing with their education or
participating in job training programs.
Formerly
called Etobicoke Girls’ Residence, the program officially adopted
its new name at its 40th Anniversary celebration in October, 2008.
